About Us
The Granite Historical Society was established in 1989 with the following mission:
The purpose of the Society shall be to promote a better appreciation of our American heritage by bringing together those persons interested in the civil, national, and literary history of the Granite region in the State of Maryland.
The Society's major functions will be to discover and collect any material which will help establish or illustrate the history of the area: its exploration, settlement, development, and activities in peace and war; and its progress in population, wealth, education, arts, science, agriculture, manufacturing, trade, and transportation. It will collect printed material such as histories, genealogies, biographies, gazettes, directories, newspapers, pamphlets, catalogs, circulars, hand-bills, programs, and posters; manuscript material, such as letters, diaries, journals, memoranda, reminiscences, rosters, service records, accounting books, charts, surveys, and field books; and materials, such as pictures, photographs, paintings, portraits, scenes, aboriginal relics, and material objects illustrative of life, conditions, events, and activities of the past and present.
The Society will disseminate information relating to the civil, natural, and literary history of the Granite region by using such means as chosen by the Board of Directors.
Two major accomplishments of the Society since its inception have been nominating and obtaining National Historic District status for the town and erecting a historic marker. If you have interest in Granite history, please consider a membership in the Society. Dues are $10/year for individuals and $20/year for families. Members receive the society's semi-annual newsletter and are eligible for discounts. To become a member, please send us, via USPS, your contact information and dues.
